There is a new service from Expedia, Travelocity and other travel websites: environmental expiation. If you wish, when you buy a plane ticket, they will figure out how much carbon your trip will be adding to the atmosphere and charge you for it. (For Boston to Los Angeles, about 3,000 miles, it comes to around $9.) The money goes to nonprofit groups that either plant trees to absorb the carbon or produce an equal amount of energy in an eco-friendly way (using windmills and such). You are still increasing the carbon in the air, but someone else, thanks to you, is reducing it by an equal amount. The net effect: no additional carbon in the atmosphere. Of course, this is all strictly voluntary. If you want to be a pig, destroy the earth for future generations and face your kids, who’ve learned all about global warming in second grade, that’s your privilege.

And so what? Maybe if the idea weren’t so closely associated with hippies like Al Gore, conservatives might see carbon credits for what they also are: a brilliant next step in the development of capitalism. What offends conservatives about carbon credits is not some green absurdity but the very core of our economic system: the free exchange of goods and services, a.k.a. the deal. If a deal is voluntary, then by definition it leaves both parties to it better off. Otherwise they wouldn’t do it. Put all these deals together and–with a few exceptions–you have free-market capitalism and prosperity. The genius of carbon credits is that it opens up a whole new inventory of things that people can buy and sell. And there is no reason that the principle should be limited to environmentalism. For example, how about a “bad-parenting surcharge.” It would work like this. Suppose you come home after a hard day of work, and there is your acne-ridden, foul-smelling brat of a son–if, indeed, he is your son, which is hard to believe–playing video games with his friends. Your living room is strewn with Dorito crumbs and other detritus that doesn’t bear close examining. Needless to say, the lawn has not been mowed as promised. How would you like to slug him? Or rather, how much would you like to slug him? You know you shouldn’t. But what if by slugging him, you could actually reduce the total amount of child abuse in the world? Wouldn’t that be a good thing?

What’s needed is a market in child-abuse credits. Somewhere in the world there is a parent who is slugging his kid every night. For a price, he would refrain for a night, or even two. By paying that parent not to slug his kid twice, you gain the right to slug your kid just once.

It’s a win-win-win. You get to slug your kid. This other father gets the money. The other guy’s kid is happy–he gets a night off from being slugged. Only your kid has no obvious reason to be happy, at least in the short run. In the longer run, he will surely be eager to take advantage of a market in “parent bashing.” In fact, for a larger fee, he will some day be able to go to your nursing home and unplug your ventilator. And somewhere in the underdeveloped world, five or even 10 elderly persons will get medicines they otherwise couldn’t afford. Such is the magic of capitalism.

The magic works best in a world of dramatic inequalities. Fortunately, that is just the world we are living in. The greater the gap between rich and poor, both domestically and globally, the more a rich person will pay and the less a poor person will require.

The usual objections can be made to all of this: Why should rich people be able to buy their way out of environmental guilt or short fuses with their kids when poor people can’t? The usual answer is that the deal doesn’t create the inequality and forbidding the deal doesn’t reduce it. If you tell a rich person this is one thing he or she cannot buy, you are also telling a poor person that this is one thing he or she cannot sell.

We can argue all day about where to draw the line and say to rich and poor: You cannot make this deal, even if it benefits both of you. It is too unseemly. Or here’s a thought: We can create a market in winning the argument. The rich person can purchase the right not to be challenged, and the poor person, for a fee, can agree to shut up. Everybody’s happy. Isn’t capitalism great?

source: MICHAEL KINSLEY

——————————————————————————————

“Har har.. Here we go again.. It’s a nice issue but I doubt the positive outcomes of the ‘pay for bad behavior’ concept. This world is made up of balances in various elements. For things to be reduce/increase, something else must pay for the price. Be it a good or bad, the other side will have to pay for the price.

For instance, we inhale oxygen then exhale CO2, then the plant did it the other way round. The wealth distribution over the globe seems to be far away from balance/equilibrium where in some countries, the gap between the rich and the poor are way too high. But think of it this way, if only the wealth being distributed fair and square and everybody will have the same amount of money to reach balance level in wealth distribution. Wow.. that’s for sure a nice and happy fair world. But unfortunately, the world is round and round it is. There will always be a rich people and poor people where in this case, the poors are the one who pay the price for the other to became rich. These are the balance term in the reality.

As for credit for bad behaviour, one thing for sure is that the more affordable people would have just spend some cash, to relieve them from responsibilities as part of the world despite being involved physically in their actions (not in monetary terms) to shape the world into a better place in return of their bad behaviour. While the unlucky one with slim pocket will always get the blame and all the hard work muscling their action as a price for bad behaviour which are contributed mutually..globally. hmm.. what a wonderful world.. sigh.. improper balancing evo and yet the balance it is! – bk“

LiveDaily Senior Writer

It turns out that Eddie Van Halen wasn’t kidding when he told Howard Stern during an early September interview that his son, 15-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen, had taken over as the legendary rock group’s new bass player.”What’s going to happen is that there’s a new member of Van Halen, and that is my son,” Van Halen told Stern via telephone during the Sept. 8 interview. “My son is in and [original bassist Michael Anthony] can do whatever he wants.”

Despite that statement, the guitarist left the band’s future, and his son’s role therein, obscured when he added: “The name Van Halen, the family legacy, is going to go on long after I’m gone. This kid is just a natural. I’m going to have him play on a solo record, and it’s going to be out–he and I.”

Over the past week, however, Eddie’s new girlfriend and publicist, Janie Liszewski, has been quoted in a number of reports as confirming that Wolfgang (Eddie’s son from his marriage to ex-wife and actress Valerie Bertinelli) is, in fact, the new bassist for the band Van Halen. She has also reportedly said that Eddie, Wolfgang and drummer Alex Van Halen (Eddie’s older brother, shown with Eddie in the above photo) have been in the studio writing and rehearsing for a 2007 summer tour, but stopped short of confirming recent widespread rumors that original frontman David Lee Roth will helm the band during that outing.

Meanwhile, Anthony published at his blog earlier this week a message in which he said: “People have been asking … ‘Are you in or are you out of any reunion tour?’ I want to let everyone know that I have not been contacted by anybody about being part of any VH reunion tour. I’ll keep ya posted.”

Van Halen last toured in 2004, at which time estranged singer Sammy Hagar–who replaced Roth in 1985, and then split with the group himself in 1996–returned to the fold. That outing ended with more bad blood between Hagar and Eddie Van Halen, and Anthony has since said that the Van Halen brothers had fired him from the band before negotiating a discounted deal that allowed him to participate in the 2004 run.

Earlier this year, Anthony teamed up with Hagar for a summer tour that featured Hagar performing one set with his solo band, and a second set with his drummer, guitarist and Anthony. Billed as The Other Half, the quartet’s setlist was comprised entirely of Van Halen tunes.

Eddie expressed displeasure with the Hagar/Anthony outing during the aforementioned “Stern Show” interview, referring to Hagar–whose nickname is the Red Rocker–as “The Little Red Rocker” and “The Little Red Worm” (the latter in reference to Hagar’s tequila business), and Anthony as “Sauce Sobolewski” (a reference to Anthony’s new hot-sauce venture coupled with his real last name).

“Sauce Sobolewski is out touring with The Little Red Rocker … I mean The Little Red Worm,” he told Stern. “I got no problem with these guys, but they’re billing themselves as the other half of Van Halen. My brother is the other half of Van Halen. They’re out there selling hot sauce and tequila and playing all my songs. It doesn’t bother me. It just makes them a cover band.”

For their part, Anthony and Hagar have claimed that Eddie’s alcohol consumption derailed the group’s 2004 reunion.

Roth, who earlier this year briefly replaced Stern as a morning radio host following Stern’s defection to Sirius Satellite Radio, has spent most of the past decade touring sporadically, performing a setlist comprised almost entirely of Van Halen songs dating back to his 1978-1985 tenure with the band. He has publicly maintained for years that he believes a reunion will happen at some point.

Roth’s positing coupled with Eddie’s statement to Stern that he is open to working with Roth again has fueled the believability of recent unconfirmed reports that Roth will be hitting the road with his former group next summer. Though many fans have spent years clamoring for just such a reunion, it remains to be seen if the group’s decision to oust Anthony–a fan favorite whose background vocals have always been a significant part of the band’s signature sound–will cause a backlash.

Despite Liszewski’s recent statements to the press, the band’s official publicity firm responded earlier today with a blanket “no comment” when asked about the current state of Van Halen. At press time, Liszewski had not responded to our request for comment.

Last month, Van Halen was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Way to Go Van Halen! As a big fan of you guys, I’m always looking for new updates of your band. Eddie’s skills and natural gift in guitar playing had triggered my passion to start playing since 12 years old. Thanks to you guys, if not because of your inspiring music, I’d definitely missed one of the most wonderful element in our life… which is.. Music and guitar playing. Thank God I tuned the radio to a wrong channel which was playing your masterpiece “Can’t stop lovin’ you” 12 years ago! Har Har… – BK

“I can’t figure out where all the money is going, and he refuses to tell me or keep records to show me where the spending is going. Why can’t he just tell me?”

The most pressure-filled issue that surfaces in marriage counseling is broken trust and communication regarding money matters. Time and time again, pain and tears come from one spouse who has attempted to hide or unsuccessfully fix an uncontrolled spending habit. Everyone is susceptible to impulsive, unscheduled purchases, but when they become uncontrollable, it is difficult to admit there is a problem.

“Dave, how do I tell my husband that I currently have over $15,000 on my credit card?”

These are real life issues and many of us say, “That could never happen to me,” but this addictive behavior is occurring regularly. Let’s explore some basic baby steps to recovery:

Prepare to tell the whole truth. This is a positive step in taking responsibility for your actions. It’s half the battle.

Talk honestly. Set a time to sit down with your spouse asking him/her not to respond until you have completed making your confession. Then tell him/her, as honestly as you can, exactly what has happened. This time should include asking for forgiveness. Be prepared prayerfully for any potential response because this may be quite a shock to your spouse. Ensure the atmosphere is peaceful and non-threatening. (If you are the unsuspecting spouse, respond with compassion and forgiveness.)

What is your spouse thinking? Listen attentively without responding, even if there is a time of silence.

Work together. Ask your spouse to help you work out a plan to attack the debt using a debt snowball or selling an item even if at a loss.

Be accountable. Establish a time (weekly at first) to stay accountable with each other to curb any relapse of your behavior. If there is, it may be time to see a counselor for some additional guidance.

Continue to communicate. When the crisis is over and wounds have healed, continue to seek your spouse’s counsel. It may seem obvious, but couples too often make big financial decisions without talking first. It’s important to agree about major purchases, even if they’re in your budget.

Once you begin talking candidly about the spending and motivating behavior, you will begin to build unity in your marriage and add peace and trust to your relationship!

Sometimes, life is just not the way we want it to be. There are always a down in our walk of life compare to the ups. When your feeling has reached up to this result, it is a sign of promises of more black days ahead. But… why me ??? always me! Is it that hard to live a happy life ? Is it so hard to pursue happiness ? Har har har.. life’s harsh..

Sounds frustating and pathetic right ? My friend, the scenario as what I mentioned on the first paragraph happens all the time to most of people. Why God gave me this test ? What sin have I committed ? Who’s to blame ? We need to find the answers to this three questions right ??? WRONG! It’s no time to blame.

Now, do you have a mirror by your side ? near you ? If there is, take a look inside. Who do you see ? Is he/she a happy person ? He/She’s just human right ? Just like everybody else. Aha.. now you Knew a little better about yourself.. Im a human after all.. with my own strengths and weakness..

If you feel that the person inside the mirror need an improvement in his/her life, get to know him/her first. This will surely gives you a better understanding of yourself. Living a happy life start within ourselves. Our inner-self – attitudes, mindset, then our surroundings.

Got the idea ? Everything starts from ourselves. For things to change, U must change first. Now, let’s try some tips which may change the rest of your days into a better, happier and exciting one.. not just for urself, but also to everyone around you.. or perhaps..the world..

Happy reading my friend.. and live a great life! Even a bat in a cave lives happily in their dark and cold home despite their blindness they moves in a pack..in a swarm.. never be too alone and single..

My favourite guitar hero of all time.

Early life

When growing up, the young Vai became interested in rock giants such as Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin which led him to take up learning the guitar. Prior to attending Berklee College of Music, Steve took guitar lessons from now fellow guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, and played in numerous local bands. He has acknowledged the influence of many guitarists including Jeff Beck and fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth.

Work with Frank Zappa

It was also at this time that he became fascinated by the music of Frank Zappa. Steve mailed transcriptions of Zappa’s guitar solos to him, and after meeting Vai for the first time he was so impressed with the abilities of the young musician, Zappa hired him to do work transcribing his seemingly endless array of experimental symphonic rock.

While employed by Zappa, he would at times tour with Zappa’s band and engage in a friendly competition with the audience, wherein audience members could bring in musical scores and see if Vai could sight-read them on the spot.

Zappa referred to Steve as his “little Italian virtuoso” and was listed in liner notes as “stunt guitar.” He would later be a featured artist on the recording, “Zappa’s Universe.” In 2006 he returned to Zappa music, as special guest on Dweezil Zappa‘s Zappa Plays Zappa tour.

Rise to prominence

After leaving Zappa in 1982 he moved to California where he recorded his first album Flex-Able and performed in a couple of bands. In 1985 he replaced Yngwie Malmsteen as lead guitarist in Graham Bonnet’s Alcatrazz with whom he recorded the album Disturbing the Peace.

Later in 1985 he joined former Van Halen front man David Lee Roth’s group to record the albums Eat ‘em and Smile and Skyscraper. This significantly increased Vai’s visibility to general rock audiences, since Roth was in a highly public battle with the Van Halen members and Vai was favorably compared by many commentators to Eddie Van Halen.

In 1986 Vai also surprised everyone by playing with ex-Sex Pistols John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd on their album “Album” (now called “Compact Disc”). Then in 1989 Vai stepped into guitarist Adrian Vandenberg’s shoes to record with British rock-group Whitesnake after Vandenberg injured his wrist shortly before recording was due to begin for the album Slip of the Tongue.

Vai also played on the Alice Cooper album “Hey Stoopid” along with Joe Satriani on the song “Feed my Frankenstein”.

Steve Vai

1990s and 2000s

Steve Vai continues to tour regularly, both with his own group and with his one time teacher and fellow guitar instrumentalist friend Joe Satriani on the G3 series of tours. Former David Lee Roth bassist Billy Sheehan also joined him for a world tour.

In 1990 Steve Vai released his critically acclaimed solo album “Passion and Warfare“. In 1994 Steve Vai began writing and recording with Ozzy Osbourne. Only one track from these sessions “My Little Man” was released on the “Ozzmosis” album. Despite Steve penning the track he does not appear on the album. His guitar parts were replaced by Zakk Wylde.

Vai’s band members throughout the 1990s included drummer Mike Mangini, guitarist Mike Keneally and bassist Philip Bynoe.

In 1994 Vai received a Grammy Award for his performance on the Frank Zappa song “Sofa” from the album Zappa’s Universe.

In July 2002, Steve Vai performed with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan, in the world premiere of composer Ichiro Nodaira‘s Fire Strings, a concerto for electric guitar and 100-piece orchestra. In 2004, a number of his compositions for orchestra, as well as orchestra arrangements of previously recorded pieces, were performed in The Netherlands by the Metropole Orchestra in a concert series entitled The Aching Hunger.

In 2003, drummer Jeremy Colson joined Vai’s group replacing previous drummer Virgil Donati. Vai’s latest album, Real Illusions: Reflections, was released in 2005, and Steve Vai and the Breed, as the band is now called, has embarked on a world tour in support of that album.

Steve Vai released a DVD of his performance at The Astoria in London in December 2001, featuring the lineup of bassist Billy Sheehan, formerly of David Lee Roth and Mr. Big, guitar and piano virtuoso Tony MacAlpine, guitarist Dave Weiner and drummer Virgil Donati.

In 2004, Steve Vai was featured on Xbox’s Halo 2 Volume 1 soundtrack, performing a heavy rock-guitar rendition of the “Halo 2 Theme“, known as “Halo 2 Theme (Mjolnir Mix)”. He also performed on the track “Never Surrender”. In the second iteration of the soundtrack, he performed on the track “Reclaimer”.

In February 2005, Vai premiered a dual-guitar (electric and classical) piece that he wrote called The Blossom Suite with classical guitarist Sharon Isbin at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris.

In 2006, Vai played as a “special guest” guitarist alongside additional guest Zappa band members, drummer Terry Bozzio and singer Napoleon Murphy Brock in the Zappa Plays Zappa tour led by Frank’s son Dweezil Zappa in Europe and the U.S. in the Spring as well as a short U.S. tour in October.

On September 21, 2006, Vai made a special appearance at the “Video Games Live” concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California. He played two songs with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. One song being the Halo Theme, the second was for the world premier trailer for Halo 3.

Steve Vai is currently editing and mixing a double record set entitled “Steve Vai’s Sound Current”. He recorded this with the Metrople Orchestra in Holland for the Dutch Government and NPS Radio. He recently released this information in a Ultimate-Guitar.com interview which can be found here

Steve Vai will also be giving a masterclass at the London Guitar Show 2007 on the 28th April 2007 at the ExCeL Center.

One of my favourite activity during my leisure time is writing. Anything.. including lyrics.. I may not be a writer or a journalist, but I do enjoy spitting out my ideas in words.. whatever I could think of.. whenever I can think of it..

Here are glimpse of my work. It is about a guy who just enter a manhood who faces though challenges along the way..

…Huh… what can I say more.. about myself ? Right now, I’m really in a deep sh*t. It is not just me.. I’ve pulled everyone into the sh*t I’ve created or should I called it my ‘pre-genius stupid investment’.

Another day is coming, the burdens on my shoulder grow bigger and become heavier to a point where I feel that I don’t have any strenght left not even to stand up. I could feel the air is getting hot and hotter that it become very hard to breath. It fells like a fire burning.. burning both my internal and external.. the flame of shame arouses inside and outside of me.. I don’t have the guts to be able to face anyone, not any one.. because, as far as I knew, I’ve troubled almost everyone.. my family, my relatives, my love and moreover, MYSELF!! Up to this very moment, I really hate myself for what I’ve done, for what I’ve foolishly planned.

Last four month, that was before any stupid decisions made by myself in the name of ‘Profit and big money’. My intention was fine as everyone would have the same goals and desire in life. Hey.. don’t tell me that you will say no to “Big Cash”..and hey.. there’s an addition for that.. Big Cash + FAST CASH.. What about that..?? Whoa! Wahsehh! Everything was perfect to me when I looked back at the plan and strategies.. Ngam-ngamlah.. it was a fine blueprint. The business is there! The money is there! The opportunity is there! And the time is now! These words keep on playing inside my mind.. the greedy side of my brain or should I admit, myself. But then, it came to a very basic law for business. Capital! This was my first mistake. Yes, I do have a capital but not at that time as per-planned. It won’t hurt this much if only I was able to stay more patient and wait for my own cash maybe for about a month or two. My own capital was about to be deposited in another one or two months which is more than enough to fund this biz.

However, I was so greedy and patient is not on my attitude’s and judgement at that time. So decided to start at the soonest. My capital was about a month away but I needed those fund to start as soon as possible. Then, in the most unlogical and stupid way, I’ve made up my mind to seek for ‘Along’ to fund my project and this was the beginning of this dark chapter of my life.

One thing about ‘tiger money’ is that, you can get it 24/7 anytime, anywhere and the terms are very loose. For a guy who thought that everything will work perfectly and fast, ‘tiger money’ is not a problem. It is a lie for me to say that I did not think about the consequences. I knew about it.. The interest was 15% per month and if I fail to pay the money back with its interest, they will haunt me and my family or even my life. The terms are cruel but the money/loan was cool and the timing was so perfect for me, as what I thought (at that time.. clever huh?! piece of sh*t.. ). I positively believed that paying all the money back with its interest is not a big deal as I confidently told myself, it’s a ‘kacang/peanut’..in just within a month. I strongly believed that because I knew that the project was very good and the possibilities to generate fast cash and big profits were very certain and I didn’t want to loose that opportunity.

As for this project, I didn’t seek out any member in family to consult with for my decision. It was an important one, and how arrogant I was by not telling my family about it…. Deep inside my heart, I just want to prove to them that I can come up with something which I can be proud of, and most important, I can contribute some good cash for my family. It’s not that we were in poverty. Hell no! We had a good income, our own family biz is doing great at that time. We have everything we wanted and we were happy. But ‘greed’ blinded my vision in my new project where I then put my trust into somebody I didn’t even know before. Instead of my family, I rather put my trust into somebody else whom I just two or three days met with. Yes, he is a friend. But that was my second mistake. Over-trust a stranger who instantly, just like a 5 minutes noodles, became my good friend! A good friend.. Huh! Wish I could rip his soul apart and make a soul satay out of it! syy…. that’s cruel!

Well, I first knew him as a good friend who had a terrible tragedy in both finance and family institutional. Oh, how I wish I didn’t met him in the first place but that’s how life goes. In a walk of life, we will meet all kind of people waiting to be known or to be friends. But there’s a fine line between a good and a bad one and we only realised when things already happened… as there should be a reason before everything. for that is how the world goes round. It is hard and I easily got blinded by symphaty’s value, especially when you teamed up with somebody who look so desperately seeking for life, who are supposed to be grateful and not letting his saviour’s down by showing hardwork with full honesty.. I’ved put my trust that he can make things happen and he’s willing to give his best shot with full honesty as he’s in a very difficult situation before.. very difficult that I could not imagine him to turn out to be a real lazy and a dishonest partner, a pretender who assumed that I knew nothing about what happened.

Hmm.. I learned something about people from all these. There are two type of people. One, who stands on his feet on the reality ground while another one is floating and are high on something. The first type is a good one as they knew what is happening around them and know where they currently stand plus a vision on their next step in life. The other one was, lost.. floating and are high on something..(probably something like a ‘kangaroo branded glue’ which addict prefer to put in a ngiukee’s plastic bag , then sniff ‘em up to heaven or even bintang kejora).. who then become sober and doesn’t care about what happen and what will in their life, who believes that everything will be done by just millions of theories and excuses of how things should be done.. but never a ‘practical’ on it.. just words.. this attitude is irritating and very annoying which I in couple of month later called it by a special name ‘Feather- Lazyness-Syndrome’ . ( I used the word ‘feather’ instead of ‘floating’)

To make things short, confidently with a big smile, I invest the ‘tiger money’ and I gave my trust to him. The location was far away from my residency which then lead to my third mistake which is an ‘unmonitored biz’. As I am running my family business, I must be in my town to look after it, while my new so-called promising project was hundreds of kilometres away. Hey, it’s ok to have biz no matter how far they were. That’s why we have terms called international biz, regional biz, global biz.. it doesn’t matter but it only matter when you didn’t monitor the progress especially the cash flow. Now.. I realized that if only I did put somebody whom I knew well, somebody who I can trust and honest to monitor the project, it won’t end like this. I kept on dreaming of ‘profits’ in the name of trusts, promises, friendship and a sweet verbal agreement…
